This is the inside of my piano:
This is what I look at when I play the piano:
Since I have a piano lesson tomorrow and I haven't practiced since my last lesson, I decided that I would be responsible and sit down and practice. Piano has EVERYTHING to do with physics. it's so crazy. When I opened the top of my piano and looked down into it, I saw how a piano functions. I saw that when the hammer, which is wood covered in felt, hits the strings, sound is produced. The sound and pitch of each note is affected by the stiffness of the strings. When the string reaches a maximum volume, the tone slowly dies away as the string slows down and eventually stop moving. I researched piano and physics and learned that the lower strings are wrapped in either iron or copper wire. This is done so that the strings vibrate more slowly which therefore produces a lower pitch. What was once a cram practice sesh, became an interesting physics learning project. shoooooooooooots

meaaaan. hi kate. =]
we'll discuss pianos in our coverage of sound. Thanks for getting a headstart on it! Good discussion and detail, kate
